SALINA – Fr. Melvin Long died on Aug. 17, 2023, in Salina. He was born Aug. 7, 1940, to Andrew and Regina (Other) Long. He attended grade3 school at St. John’s in Beloit, high school at St. Fidelis prep seminary in Victoria, KS, college at St. Mary’s in Winona, MN. He did theological and advanced studies at the University of Louvain as well as the University of Madrid and University of Barcelona, both in Spain, as well as the University of Notre Dame.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Jerry in Vietnam in 1968; Fr. Galen in 2012 and Donald in 2018.
Survivors include brothers Charles and wife Mary, Salina; Robert and wife Mary, Belle Vista, Arkansas; Carl and wife, Joan, Belle Vista, Arkansas; sister Joyce Highland and husband John, Beloit; and sister-in-law Beatrice Long, Arvada, CO.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 AM on Saturday, Aug. 26 at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Salina, KS.
A Rosary will be at 6 p.m. on Friday at the Cathedral.
Memorials may be given to St. John’s Building Restoration Fund or Salina Diocesan Bishops Annual Appeal.
