BPD 420 safety campaign stresses driving sober

Posted

APRIL 20 — commonly known as “420 Day” — is a counterculture holiday often associated with increased marijuana use. While some may choose to celebrate, the Beloit Police Department reminds the public that driving under the influence of drugs, including marijuana, is illegal and dangerous.

The Beloit Police Department (BPD) joins law enforcement across the state to remind drivers If you Feel Different, You Drive Different. Drivers can expect to see increased law enforcement presence on local roads during the statewide safety campaign, which runs from April 17-21.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drugs like marijuana can impair the ability to drive because they slow coordination, judgment and reaction times. Driving impaired by any substance whether legal or not is against the law in all 50 states. Even in states where marijuana laws have changed, it’s still illegal to drive under the influence of the drug.

Driving high has serious and deadly consequences.

• If you choose to use marijuana or any impairing drug, arrange for a designated driver, use a ride-share or call a cab. • If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact law enforcement.
