Beloit boys defeat Russell 49-41 / Palen leads the way with 22 points
BELOIT – The Beloit Trojans traveled to Russell on Monday night. Hudson Smith scored for the Trojans off the opening tip in a game that the Trojans eventually took control of as the game went on. Russell answered with a three pointer to take a rare lead in the game. Points proved tough to come by, for both teams, in the middle stages of the first quarter. Both teams fought turnovers which limited both teams scoring attempts.
Beloit tied the game at the free throw line near the midpoint of the quarter as the game stood at 3-3. Hayden Budke broke the scoring drought with a reverse lay up and a 5-3 lead. Russell answered with a three pointer to lead 6-5 with three minutes to play in the first quarter. Russell scored a late first quarter basket before a Beloit free throw set the score at 8-7 Broncos at the end of the first quarter.
Russell opened the second quarter with five quick points to lead 13-7. Later in the second, trailing 15-7, Vincent Palen got going with a driving basket to snip the Broncos advantage to six. Palen later added a free throw to close the margin to five with 3:53 to play in the first half. Beloit applied full court pressure to slow the Russell offense with some success. Palen then drilled a right wing three pointer to draw within two at 15-13. Palen later hit his second three of the game, and then his third, to give Beloit a 19-17 lead at halftime.
Smith opened the third quarter with a basket just as he had done to open the game. Smith then took a steal the distance for a lay up and Beloit had their largest lead at 23-17. Palen then drilled another his third three-pointer of the game to force a Russell timeout and lead 26-17. Another three from Palen made it a 29-19 game with five-minutes to play in the third. Russell began to chip away at the Beloit advantage and had drawn within three at 29-26 later in the third quarter. The Trojan’s advantage was closed to one, at 33-32, going into the fourth quarter.
Beloit reestablished themselves in the final seven minutes and outscored the Broncos 14-6 down the stretch to secure the 49-41 victory.
Vincent Palen led the Trojans in double figures with 22 points. Hudson Smith scored 9 points; Tate Thompson 8; Ryan Broeckelman and Paxton Harris 4 points apiece; Carson Cox 2.
The Trojans improved to 14-6 overall and 7-5 in the NCAA. Good for third place in the league standing behind Ellsworth and Sacred Heart who is the league champion with a perfect 12-0 record in NCAA games this season.
