Swine business boost local economies

Gold Standard Farms, based in Waucoma, Iowa, have been building on a hog farming operation near Solomon Rapids, southeast of Beloit and anticipate an opening in full operation near July 1, 2018.

The Mitchell County Commissioners approved a Neighborhood Revitalization Grant for temporary tax abatement to Jason Golly dba Gold Standard Farms of Decora, Iowa for the construction on Nov. 29, 2017. Since then, the breeding, gestation and farrowing site, totaling an estimated $3.4 million, has been in construction and will hold 3,000 housing units for the swine business.

The company now owns seven hog sites in the area, within a 200 mile radius.

"We now have 26 employees and will hope to hire in the neighborhood of 35 employees when construction is completed," said Production Manager Charlie McKenzie. "We do a lot of business in purchasing building supplies, trucking, feed supplies and anything we need in our business. We are proud to boost the local economy as much as we can. We have also had a lot of positive feedback from the area."
